The Flood Wardens have been conducting annual flood mitigation checks throughout August and we held our Virtual Meeting on Saturday to plan for Autumn/Winter.
DRAINS : TOP OF THE LIST as a concern across the whole Parish following recent downpours..
B&NES is working to deep clear the drains but leaves on the surface poses a recurring problem that Wardens alone can’t keep on top of.
ADOPT A DRAIN – WE NEED YOUR HELP
Is there a drain near your house or in your road that gets covered with leaves?
Keeping drains clear of leaves makes a huge difference to surface water flooding. This year we have already had 2 episodes of significant road flooding and although the Wardens regularly clear they cannot keep up with all the drains.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
This is a Parish-wide problem not confined to river flooding areas and a number of people in Chew Magna are already part of the scheme.
If you have a drain in your road that gets blocked by leaves and are willing to ‘ADOPT’ it please contact me to tell me which drain it is so I can make a Parish-wide map.. Then you can choose whether to clear it yourself or contact me to warn us it’s blocked. If there’s a problem with leaf disposal I can collect.
SIGN UP FOR A LEAF-CLEARING DAY 10am – 12 noon
Every year in Autumn as the leaves fall we have some days when we all go out leaf clearing. I supply equipment like bags/brooms/shovels and Hi-viz tabards. This year I will also provide masks and disposable gloves to ensure we are Covid safe and equipment will have been sanitised.
You can specify where you want to clear and we always work separately or in family groups. Our days this year are:
Saturday October 3rd, Sunday 1st November and (if needed) Saturday 28th November.
