Local Authorities are required to adopt a Code of Conduct which sets out rules governing the
\nbehaviour of their Members and satisfies the requirements of the Localism Act 2011. All
\nelected, co-opted and independent Members of local authorities, including Parish Councils,
\nare required to abide by their own, formally adopted, Code. The Code of Conduct seeks to
\nensure that Members observe the highest standards of conduct in their civic role. The Code
\nis intended to be consistent with the seven principles:<\/p>\n
1. Selflessness<\/strong> – Holders of public office should act solely in terms of the public 2. Integrity<\/strong> – Holders of public office should not place themselves under any financial or 3. Objectivity<\/strong> – In carrying out public business, including making public appointments, 4. Accountability<\/strong> – Holders of public office are accountable for their decisions and 5. Openness<\/strong> – Holders of public office should be as open as possible about the 6. Honesty<\/strong> – Holders of public office have a duty to declare any private interests 7. \nthemselves, their family, or their friends.<\/p>\n

\nawarding contracts, or recommending individuals for rewards or benefits, holders of
\npublic office should make choices on merit.<\/p>\n
\nactions to the public and must submit themselves to whatever scrutiny is appropriate to
\ntheir office.<\/p>\n
\ndecisions and actions that they take. They should give reasons for their decisions and
\nrestrict information only when the wider public interest clearly demands.<\/p>\n
\nrelating to their public duties and to take steps to resolve any conflicts arising in a way
