Computer-owners warned about scammers

Scammers are trying to steal people’s personal data by tricking PC-owners into giving them access to their computers, Bath & North East Somerset Council warns.

The Council’s Trading Standards team has received several complaints about conmen posing as workers from software giant Microsoft who encourage people to download software to fix a non-existent problem with their home PC.

The software turns out to be malicious 'spyware' which allows criminals access to their personal data. Those targeted by the scam could also be urged to buy software by giving the caller their credit card details.

Councillor David Dixon (Lib-Dem, Oldfield), Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: "Bath & North East Somerset Council has received a number of calls about this scam which appears to be globally-run and has recently begun targeting residents in our area.

"The victim receives a call telling them their PC has reported an error message, has been hacked, or is running slowly, and is offered advice on how to fix the problem.

"They may be encouraged to hand over bank details to buy software but can also be asked to switch on their PC and download software there and then which could give the scammer remote access to their computer.

"The scammers are quite aggressive and will attempt to intimidate potential victims by using highly technical language along with threats of dire consequences if they do not fix the supposed computer problem urgently."

Bath & North East Somerset Council warns that victims could be handing over access to their computer to criminals who could steal personal and financial information. They may also be conned into parting with hundreds of pounds for potentially damaging or non-existent software.

The Council has the following advice for PC-owners:

If you think you have been a victim of a scam contact Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Trading Standards team via Consumer Direct on 08454 040506. Anyone with information on this or any other scam can report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.

The Roman Baths will be running free “Style a Statue” sessions from Monday 13 to Friday 17 February, from 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm, to create a card statue inspired by one of those on display. Admission to the Roman Baths is free to Discovery Card holders.

The free “Be My Valentine” drop-in events at the Fashion Museum on Tuesday 14 February, from 10.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 3.30pm, offer the chance to make individual hearts and flowers to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Entry to the Museum is free for Discovery Card holders and National Trust members.

Visitors to the Victoria Art Gallery can get their creative juices flowing with “Big, Bright and Bold” – hosted by the Young @ Art Club on Thursday 16 February – which encourages children aged 3-7 to enjoy the Gallery’s special paintings and create their own artworks full of colour.

This is followed on Friday 17 February by “Dazzle” where children aged 6-11 can be inspired by the Victoria Art Gallery’s display of exciting and colourful paintings by Gillian Ayres and create unique art with bold colours.

Both Victoria Art Gallery workshops cost £3.75 per child and run from 10.30am to 12noon and 1.30pm to 3pm on their respective days. All children must be accompanied by an adult and places must be booked in advance on 01225 477244.

Win your own wedding at the Guildhall Wedding Open Day

Guildhall Wedding Open Day, Sunday 26 February, 11am – 2pm

Following on from the success of the Guildhall Wedding Open Day over the last three years, Bath & North East Somerset Council is hosting another free open day on Sunday 26 February.

At the event at the Guildhall, Bath, staff from the Bath Register Office will be on hand to show visitors the rooms available for ceremonies and receptions. Visitors will also have the chance to find out more details about the legal preliminaries to marriage and civil partnerships and a selection of caterers and wedding suppliers will exhibit in the stunning Georgian Banqueting Room.

Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Superintendent Registrar Alison Manning said: “There is a lot to organise when you are planning a marriage or a civil partnership. This Guildhall Open Day will be a brilliant opportunity to meet the experts, see the rooms available for ceremonies, witness mock ceremonies and meet with wedding suppliers and caterers all in one place.

“I would invite anyone planning a ceremony to join us in the Guildhall on Sunday 26 February, at 11am. I can guarantee you will find the event very informative and enjoyable; it might even encourage those ladies who are contemplating proposing to their partners in this leap year, to pop the question!”

The event is open to all and members of the public can just turn up on the day. Any visitors who register their details on the day will be eligible for a 10% discount from Bath Register Office and a 10% reduction on room hire at the Guildhall from Bath’s Historic Buildings (terms and conditions apply).

All those who register their details will be automatically entered into a free prize draw. The top prize is a complimentary civil ceremony in a room in the Guildhall, along with a Registrar to perform a civil ceremony. Other prizes include a half day spa treatment from The Royal Crescent with a two course lunch, an engagement photo shoot with 20x16-inch canvas from Nick Williams Photography, and a selection of runner up prizes supplied by exhibitors on the day.

One couple who attended last year’s Wedding Open Day, and subsequently booked a ceremony, commented: “We both found the day extremely useful and informative. Having only ever been to church weddings the idea of a mock ceremony during the event was truly inspired. We both thought that it was very well done and helped us in the whole process. All the staff were very helpful and friendly.”
